Taxation in Belgium

In Belgium are three levels of tax authority: national, regional and local. Belgium has one of highest tax burden in EU, including social security it is the highest in EU for single earner. The total tax revenue is 55 %; average in EU is 41 %. 

An expatriate working in Belgium will typically be liable to Belgian income tax. In Belgium is no wealth tax for individuals (for instance: it is in France or Spain). The total social contributions in Belgium are very high too. The main direct taxes applicable in Belgium are: corporate income tax and personal income tax. The main indirect tax applicable in Belgium is VAT.

Total receipts of tax and insurance in the Netherlands:

  • 32 % - personal income tax
  • 29 % - social and health insurance 
  • 24 % - VAT
  • 8 % - corporation income tax
  • 7 % - other
